Good Things - A Sonnet

Good Things - A Sonnet

What defines good things?
How do we know what’s truly good?
Is it the smile it leaves behind
Or the weight it lifts off our shoulders?

Good things, we all want them,
Crave them,  but do we see the cost they bring?
Good things don’t always start good.

The seed breaks before it blooms.
Fire refines gold before it shines.
Good things test us first,
Stretch us, bend us, even burn us.

Yet still, we chase thee
Because in the end,  Good things stay,
But no one said they last.
